Underground People is a collective photographic book that explores the memory and identity of Sardinian miners—a forgotten people shaped by the “Coal Civilization” of Carbonia, Ingurtosu, and Piscinas. Conceived by Giovanni Marrozzini and Angelo Ferracuti, the book is a tribute to those who once crawled through the earth’s veins, their blackened faces etched into history.

Through the lenses of six photographers—Zuliani, Bonivento, De Maria, Trucchia, Gelain, and Cocci—guided by Marrozzini, the images reveal tunnels, tools, and lost objects, forming a visual anthropology of mining life. Ferracuti’s personal reflections add emotional depth, echoing the voices of a working class once among Europe’s most combative.

Set against the raw beauty of Costa Verde, where industrial ruins scar the cliffs, the book speaks of sacrifice, struggle, and resilience. As Corrado Stajano wrote, it recounts pain, repression, and shattered hopes. Yet the surreal, timeless photographs insist on remembrance—honoring dignity and labor. Underground People is not just a tribute to the past, but a call to reflect on what endures.
